Mari Kaneko, known as “the Janis of Shimokitazawa,” has long been a defining presence in Japan’s rock, blues, and soul scenes. Celebrated for her commanding voice and live performances, she is deeply respected by fellow musicians across generations. KenKen, her son, is the bassist of the rock band RIZE, recognized for his forceful playing and singular groove.
As mother and son, both rooted in Shimokitazawa, they have shaped its music culture and the broader Japanese rock scene — embodying the way music carries across generations.
